ARTIST STATEMENT
My art is informed by the beauty and fragility of the natural world. I use fibers to
convey a sense of the transitory, ephemeral nature of existence. At the heart of my
work is a desire to engage the viewer, to create a fresh sense of the
interconnectedness of all life.
I try to select material that is integral to my work. With cast paper, silk, wood and
flax, I can express the qualities that I see in the natural environment: transparency and
solidity, vulnerability and strength. I'm attracted to natural and tactile materials that I
can shape and layer, hoping to draw the viewer into the hidden dimensions of nature
and mind.
COMMENTS ON THE FIBER FIELD
For me, fiber is a material with endless possibilities. Since my first experience with
the alchemy of papermaking, I've reveled in the power of fiber to build, layer, shape,
and create new contexts for what I want to express. I've also found that non-traditional
material such as vinyl tape, hog casings, polyethylene film, steel wool, metal filings and
ordinary objects close at hand can elicit a new and distinctive visual language.
Contemporary artists have, of course, been using fiber innovatively for some time.
But now we see it appearing more and more often in mainstream art magazines,
galleries, museums, and biennials all over the world.
Fiber connects us to a rich tradition that will continue to evolve, expanding and
inspiring us for many years to come.
