ARTIST STATEMENT
My work focuses on endangered and disappearing textile traditions in Asia. I write about and publish research findings and produce and exhibit art work inspired by my research. As a Professor in Textile Arts at the University of California, Davis, I am pursuing my passion for non-western textiles in ways that contribute to a synergy between these various disciplines.

I am continually inspired by the innovation and skill of artisans who created beautiful objects, and by the ways these fabrics expressed their souls and social roles within their cultures. This life-long love has culminated in the publication of my book entitled The Shining Cloth: Dress and Adornment that Glitters. This work examines the visual culture and social and ritual contexts of glimmering textiles from around the world.
