FiberScene is committed
to showing the work of new graduates in the field of Fiber Art. For our
second annual graduate show we highlight the work of Annette Jay Hoyt
who received her MFA from California College of Arts and Craft, Oakland,
California, this June.
We see a connecting thread with Hoyt's background in fashion/apparel
and her current abstract sculptures which appear to deconstruct the
very essence of a worn garment. We encourage you to read her statement
below, look at the work and let us know what you think
Annette Jay Hoyt
Artist's Statement
The reflection begins at the contradiction in embracing and rejecting
tradition within the same moment. My work pays tribute to the spaces
between present and past, between awake and asleep, and other transitory
temporal experiences. I devote particular attention to the passage of
time and to honoring the sense of slow time. I both lament and revere
a past that quite possibly never had a present. I explore certain aspects
of accumulation inherent to various tending rituals. Wrapped up in the
obsessive process is the state of consciousness induced by repetitive
or rhythmic activity, an embodiment of my desire for wholeness quietly
couched in words, objects, and space.
