Bay Area Graduate Show -- MFA 2002

Every summer FiberScene reserves this space for recent graduates. This summer's artists Zoe Nemeth and Keiko Sakagami are from California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, while Rui-xiang Zhang graduated from the University of California, Davis. For a complete listing of Bay Area Fiber programs, refer to our Resource Page.

Keiko Sakagami's contemporary kimonos embrace 21st Century multiculturalism. While the form directly references historical Japanese costumes, her whimsical combinations of surface designs emphasize a distinctly modern approach.

The installations that Zoe Nemeth creates "…highlight ideas of invasion, contagion, paranoia and observation". The results are repulsive yet wonderfully seductive.

Rui-xiang Zhang's work is based on a Chinese proverb: "The reed is soft, flexible, yet strong. No matter what pressure the reed experiences, it always returns to its original self-shape." Zhang's sculptures express flexibility and stubbornness, qualities she uses as a metaphor for human strengths and difficulties.

FiberScene.com supports up and coming artists through its summer Graduate Show. If you are planning to graduate in 2003, we encourage you to submit your work. Contact us at mgblock@fiberscene.com
