Metal work as Fiber Art? While not all traditional Fiber artists, the participants
in this show do express a Fiber sensibility. Warren Seelig is famous
for his heroically scaled, highly geometric sculptures. Within an architectural
metal armature, he uses fabric under tension or found objects to create works
that recall early mathematical and scientific renderings. Heavy and chunky,
light and airy, Tracy Krumm's work references historical artifacts; her
strikingly contemporary sculptures could also be medieval torture devices. "I
question and comment on identity, duality, relationships and beauty by juxtaposing
the historically gender-specific activities of blacksmithing and crocheting nets
of delicate wire lace with found elements of metal, stone and glass." Susan
Lordi Marker actually applies metal to fabric to create surface distortions
and mysterious textures. Metal initiates a transformative process whereby the
fabric becomes even more precious, a piece new-born and worthy of preservation. Nancy
Koenigsberg uses the ancient technique of knotting to build intricate 3-dimensional
structures from fine-gauge metal wire. The glorious open work that results "creates
a sense of weightlessness and luminesence." Lindsay Rais defines
the organic shape of pistachio shells through the rigid formality of metal. In
this way she creates a dialogue between nature and technology in her precise and
controlled baskets. While some of the artists in this show use metal as
flexible fabric, others portray a rapport with the medium that defies the traditional
hard, rigid elements and instead shares a camaraderie with the supple aspects
of Fiber. | |
