Memory/ Memorial
September 15 - November 15, 2003

In these fast-paced, uncertain times there is little room for pause or reflection. Our current Gallery show, however, brings together five artists who succeed in isolating moments from the past in a myriad of intriguing formats.

Kay Kahn's work recalls ancient Greek faience. Her multi-layered images create a traveling landscape. Memories of childhood, wandering thoughts and fleeting moments grace the surface of her vessels.

In Anna Torma's work we also see how thoughts filter through our heads. Her whimsical embroideries show glimpses of human histories and patchworks of random moments

While Anna Torma's work embraces life, Michele Sales creates shroud-like mummy forms that remind us of death. Through skillful layering and manipulation of the surface she achieves the illusion of weathering and decay.

Marna Goldstein Brauner approaches the subject of death through the reincarnation of antique textiles. Photographic imagery and obsessive beading draw our attention to isolated images and the memory of past lives.

Finally, Beth Nobles provides a direct storytelling approach to the theme of memory. She uses traditional, historical needlework to politicize familial stories and social commentaries.

So stop, pause, reflect, enjoy…
