From glass sculpture to microscopic cellular weaving, our seven internationally
acclaimed artists create their own natural wonders. Using organic elements in
their conceptual work, they question, confiscate and redefine "nature"
as art. Irish artist, Patricia McKenna creates installations and
site-specific works at once familiar, yet vaguely disconcerting. She appropriates
then relocates natural materials as a metaphorical comment on politics, time and
memory. Following her background in medicine, Ruth Tabacay weaves
design motifs inspired by the beauty and mystery of microscopic organisms. Surprising
in scale and place, Patrick Dougherty's temporary shelters evoke the magical,
natural, and spiritual. He wonderfully manages to harness the "forces of
nature" while simultaneously reminding us of life's ephemeral qualities. Marcia
Wolfson Ray uses nature as found objects to create sculptural forms. Removed
from their environment, the materials are transformed into objects of beauty seen
primarily in terms of color shape and form. The whimsical, fleeting quality
of Kathryn Lipke Vigesaa's work alludes to anthropological, primitive forms.
Often appearing ritualistic or transitory, her work speaks of the beauty and harmony
of nature. Dorothy Gill Barnes patiently engages in the slow methodical
processes of nature. Her finished vessels reflect this time imbued sensibility
and echo the living roots of their origins. The gravity defying, awe-inspiring
installations of Steve Tobin capture milliseconds in nature. Using thousands
of glass cylinders, Tobin convincingly isolates the phenomenal force of water
falls and rushing streams. May the force of Nature be with you!
