June 15, 2004 - September 15, 2004
Every summer FiberScene reserves this space for recent MFA graduates. This
summer's artists are: Debbie Baskerville, Jude Graveson, Mayumi Hamanaka, Emily
Stewart and Kuniko Sasaki. Debbie Baskerville's (UC Davis) work "explores
the complex interactions between earthly and human nature." She digitally
prints photographic imagery onto cloth, following the ancient practice of incorporating
new technology in the continuation of traditional clothing production. Jude
Graveson's (Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland, NZ) current works "reflect
her fascination with the human mind, and its filtering and thinking mechanism."
She surprises us with the transparent, ethereal quality of gut that contradicts
our perception of surfaces derived from animal innards. Mayumi Hamanaka
(California College of the Arts) examines the loss of individuality by looking
at the collective whole. Comfortable in a variety of mediums, her most recent
work uses the iconoclastic camouflage pattern to illustrate the loss of individuality. Emily
Stewart (Arizona State University, now resides in the Bay Area) creates maps
alluding to places she has called home. Using hand-dyed cloth, an intimate and
familiar material, she symbolizes and prioritizes her recollections of daily life--a
sunlit kitchen, a twisted dirt road or the route biked to school each day. For
Kuniko Sasaki (California College of the Arts) paper-making is a meditative,
sensual process in which she combines "the contemporary art styles and metaphors
in Asian philosophies." Her screens and enormous installations convey both
the delicacy and resilience of the medium. FiberScene.com supports up and
coming artists through its summer Graduate Show. If you are planning to graduate
in 2005, we encourage you to submit your work. For a complete listing of Bay Area
Fiber programs, refer to our Resource Page. Contact us at mgblock@fiberscene.com
