The most exciting thing about curating exhibitions of emerging artists is that no two shows are ever the same. Because emerging artists don't stay emerging for very long. Being "emerging" is not easy to define. It's a curious period between being a student and being a recognized name. It's the fuzzy front end of an artist's career. It's the work that will later be referred to as one's "early work". It's an exciting time. The Craft Liberation Front (CLF) is obsessed with "early work". CLF is a national organization dedicated to promising artists who utilize a craft medium by providing web space to showcase their work free of charge. (www.craftliberationfront.com) ETA2005 focuses specifically on some of CLF's textile artists-a self-discriminating category of conceptual artists that employ textiles or textile techniques in their work. The range of techniques, materials and concepts employed is what's so energizing about rising textile artists right now.
