Marking Boundries
May 15 - September 1, 2007

Most of our gallery shows start with a conceptual theme; this time we’ve chosen to isolate a process and show a sampling of work by seven internationally acclaimed artists who integrate their conceptual ideas with the most basic of textile methodology—they weave. Prevalent in almost all cultures, weaving, the interlacing of fibers, is one of the most ancient textile techniques. Some of the artists in our show employ the same methodical weaving methods utilized 20,000 years ago. Others embrace 21st century computerized technology.

Louise Lemieux Berube’s (Canada) computerized jacquard weavings are studies in dance, choreography, and nature. Her photographic imagery radiates light and movement in the resulting fabric.

Norway’s Dorthe Herup’s colorful ikat weavings express calmness and motion through light and dark threads. Her intentionally unwoven threads add power and mystery to the work.

Ann Nyberg (Sweden) generates many watercolor crayon sketches of the dreamy landscapes of her imagination. These bright, naïve sketches are transformed into fanciful weavings with delightful embroidered embellishments.

In contrast, Diane Sheehan’s (USA) work references the current political and social climate. Her work builds on the historical tradition of the embroidered Bayeaux Tapestry’s epic tale of war and misadventure. Sheehan’s Jacquard woven allegory remarks on the relationship between devotion/piety and destruction.

Jae Kyung Lee (Korea) uses smoke as the symbolic image of generation and extinction--the cycle of life and death. Her calm, meditative work reminds us that life is complete with opposition, the good and the bad exist simultaneously.

In a similar vein, David Brackett (USA) appeals to the viewer’s innate sense of order and search for understanding. He reassembles his imagery into repetitive patterns and mathematical progressions that reflect microscopic and macroscopic environments.

Finally, Minako Watanabe (Japan) creates three-dimensional forms and environments from multiple layered weavings. Exquisitely executed, her fabrics transform into freestanding sculptures that verify Watanabe’s supremacy of craftsmanship, which is the true value of self expression in Japanese tradition.

What all of these artists have in common is their devotion to the primitive structure of yarns that go over then under. We hope you find this show both fun and provocative. Be sure to let us know your thoughts.
