Our first Graduate
Show brings together work of students from the University of California at Davis,
California College of Arts and Craft in Oakland, and San Francisco State University
in San Francisco. The talent demonstrated here reflects the strength and commitment
of these Bay Area Fiber Departments. San Francisco State's Fay Zhang 's
love of weaving is apparent. In her complex pattern structure, she uses calligraphic
marks to refer the viewer to a diversity of cultures and written languages. Kathy
Rousso (UC Davis) has worked with indigenous cultures throughout the world. This
experience translates into ethnic inspired basketry. Karen Hampton (UC
Davis) identifies herself as a weaver, a storyteller, an artist. Her political
and spiritual weavings give voice to the struggle of African American women. Anna
Von Mertens (CCAC) stitches a grid structure to describe personal events/environments.
Her unique bed installation gives us a traditional context for her conceptual
quilts. Our MFA show continues next month with a focus on four more Bay
Area Graduates. | |||
