February 1, 2008 - May 1, 2008
In our continuing mission to showcase textile art from around the world (don’t forget to look at our previous show of American artists who rocked Poland last year), we proudly present the work of a diverse group of artists with roots in the Baltic Republic of Latvia, formerly part of the Soviet block, now independent and member of the European Union.
We first met these lively Latvians at the International Fiber Art Biennial in China. You’ll see why they got our attention.
We bring you nine of the most talented artists from Latvia's thriving contemporary Fiber Art community. Many work on a magnificent scale producing installation art, while a couple work here in North America but have long Latvian Roots.
Haven’t been to this hot, up-and-coming tourist destination yet? We bring Latvian Roots to you!
Peter Sidars, a lively, exuberant artist, was one of the earliest Latvian fiber artists to explore new structures and form and continues to use evolving technologies.
Gundega Strautmane’s ordered and controlled work champions pattern and structure.
Ieva Krumina uses entymological imagery as a visual metaphor for human fragility.
Lija Rage imbues a contemplative spirituality in her abstract works influenced by contemporary and historical culture.
Baiba Ritere translates the luminescent imagery of nature into richly defined tapestries.
Zane Berzina creates “innovative textile surfaces which behave, look or feel like skin”. She is a co-founder and co-director of the E-Text+Textiles (ETT) project in Riga, Latvia, an artist residency that facilitates interdisciplinary work.
The installation by Ilze Bebris reflects the complexity of work developed during her residency at ETT.
Finally, we have two artists who were not born in Latvia, but whose parents were. Vita Plume and Ilze Aviks now live in North America but continue to identify with their roots.
Aviks explores the Latvian folk textile tradition with an undertext that examines the politics of mark-making.
Vita Plume’s work exposes the immigrant experience and its context within the cultural divide.
Enjoy this thrilling blend of Baltic tradition and contemporary Fiber Art.
