Paper, Rock, Scissors.

Paper is Fiber in its simplest form. Its versatile qualities make it an exciting medium for the artists below who exploit paper's ability to become flexible or rigid, opaque or translucent, strong or fragile. Their efforts create remarkably unexpected results.

Each of our five internationally acclaimed artists has a unique process for manipulating paper....

Barbara Lee Smith fuses, stitches, and paints to document minute changes that pass over time. Her pieces evoke the past yet appear surprisingly modern.

Mary Merkel-Hess translates the grassy memories of her childhood into elegant, vibrant vessels. In her molded pieces, paper and reed become form and structure.

Ray Pierotti emphasizes the play between paper and light, constructing meditation screens that are at once serene and inspirational.

There is an awesome quality about the process in Jae Ko's work. She rolls together hundreds of layers of dyed paper strips and compresses them into powerful sculptural forms.

Hiroko Yamamoto describes her abstract sculptures as "indefinable, distressing alien objects." Disguising paper by coating it with paint and vinyl, she confuses as she amuses.

While this show only provides a glimpse of the diversity and variety of paper work throughout the world, the artists here are connected by the textile sensibilities they each bring to paper.
